Future within your reach, Icona Design Group debuts futuristic showcars with strategic partners at 2019 Auto Shanghai

Shanghai-16th April 2019-The 18th Auto Shanghai officially starts. Icona Design Group makes its appearance with Chinese leading technology and automotive OEM enterprises including JD Logistics, Meituan, and Chery New Energy, and debuts a range of innovative products.

At Auto Shanghai this year, 2019 German Design Award winner Nucleus concept, Space-Pod, a small autonomous robot designed by Icona for the Chinese leading e-commerce platform Meituan, and JD Autonomous Logstics Vehicle gather into a strong formation of showcars at NECC Shanghai 8.1H Pavillion. Among them, JD Autonomous Logstics Vehicle is a joint effort between JD, Icona, and Chery New Energy, which premiered first time in the world; Nucleus has its Shanghai debut after a successful journey in Genava, Los Angeles and Paris; last but not the least, it is also the first time Meituan Space-Pod is showcased anywhere else but 2019 CES in Las Vegas.

Icona Nucleus, the ultimate self-driving living room

Nucleus represents the synthesis of futurism and a human-centered mindset, and embodies Icona’s vision for the future of mobility. The Level-5 autonomous driving system designed by Holomatic fades the driver seat into history. During design process, Holomatic equips Nucleus with sensors that are already mature at the moment, inlcuding cameras and millimeter wave radar, and introduces Velarray laser radar by Velodyne as an essential part of sensors on the whole vehicle, hence the requirements of sensor performance and vehicle styling are both satisfied. Inside the vehicle, the absence of a driver does not only mean the absence of a steering wheel and a dashboard, but the opportunity for a new understanding of mobile living spaces, where the focus is no longer the road but the destination.

Mr. Samuel Chuffart, Icona Design Group VP & Global Design Director, says “This revolutionary concept vehicle demonstrates a paradigm shift for future mobility and has already been the source of  inspiration for several other concepts which have followed its introduction in Geneva last year.

Technology should be felt but not seen and so a “less is more approach” has been used, resulting in a fluid and sculptural body that combines the needs of both aerodynamics and ergonomics. The body of Nucleus is 5.25 meters long, 2.12 meters wide, 1.75 meters tall, equipped with four 26-inch wheels. Its powertrain system applies the cutting-edge in-wheel motor technology, each wheel is equipped with one L1500 in-wheel motor developed by Icona’s partner Elaphe, the maximum output power can reach 110kW, and the peak torque is 1500 N.m. Meanwhile, the semi-transparent trim boards of the same colour as the body replaces traditional window glass and thus make the convenience for passengers to enjoy the view on the road with discretion.

Inside Nucleus, there are 6 flexible seats that are able to form a centeral sofa. Seated inside Nucleus will bring you a deja-vu of ultra-luxury hotel living room. With an advanced infortainment system, the passengers can deal with business issues or simply relax no matter how long the ride is.

Meituan Space-Pod brings high-quality life aesthetic

Meituan Space-Pod, as the first robot product specially designed for take-out delivery scenario, is aimed at autonomous delivery service inside buildings,

The Space-Pod is equipped with 3 separate drawer containers to help up to three receivers on each journey, and it communicates with sound and screen while using face recognition. It aspires for a simple modern sculpture rather than a robot which is too personified.  In the same way as modern art is making its presence felt in today’s architecture, Icona wants AI to be an aesthetic yet non-obtrusive helper with a welcome presence.

The world premiere of JD Autonomous Logistics Vehicle

JD Autonomous Logistics Vehicle is the first on road Level 4 autonomous logistic vehicle from JD and has been designed by Icona and developed together with JD and Chery New Energy. With a maximum storage capacity of 4000L, it leaves no space for driver but all for goods. Under the guidance of current traffic laws, JD Autonomous Logistics Vehicle is able to spontaneously plan its own route and reazlie multiple functions such as obstacle recognition, automatic car following, and V2X.

At present, it is intended to operate within  JD’s premises and cover the distance from JD warehouses to JingDong delivery stations and JD terminal delivery robots. In the future, a vehicle like this could be used on campuses, in industrial parks and other controlled private and public areas, and potentially also (after tomorrow) on public roads, starting with those roads with dedicated lanes.

Regarding design, Icona strives to convey a simple, technical and yet friendly message. Its seemingly symmetrical front and rear, together with lights on each corner,describea non-traditional automotive language. Rather than a directional design, it has a stable and agile attitude together with a non-threatening iconic identity, which is like no object in our urban landscape. The design is approachable, not intimidating. Its light communication signature faces outwards rather than forwards: the intention is to provide an immediate and intuitive connection for the logistic personal and the people adjacent to the vehicle.

After signing strategic partnership with Meituan in 2019 Las Vegas CES, Icona updated the list with another essential partner JD, a giant in Chinese Internet scenes.

Icona Design Group to debut at Los Angeles Auto Show 2018

American premiere for the Icona Nucleus concept vehicle on display at the LA Convention Center.

Turin/Los Angeles, 12 November 2018 – Double debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Italian design company Icona will participate for the first time at the car event in Los Angeles, California. Its latest creation, the autonomous driving concept vehicle Icona Nucleus will make its American premiere on the Icona stand on November 29.

On the same day, Icona will also be among the key players of the Car Design Forum dedicated to “Imagining the future of the car” where it will display a scale model of the Nucleus in quality of sponsor.

 

The appearance at the automobile event in Los Angels this year comes as a consistent step in Icona’s growth in the US market. Established in summer 2016, the Icona Design Los Angeles studio now counts 20 people between designers, modelers and engineers and already receives in excess of 40% of his revenues from locally gained clients, while the rest comes from international projects for clients in Europe and China.

Icona Nucleus Winner of the German Design Award 2019

In fact, the international jury of the German Design Council qualified the Nucleus as Winner of the German Design Award 2019 in two categories: Passenger Vehicles and Universal Design “for outstanding design quality”.

its use and versatility will be directly reflected in the multiple possibilities of its interior design.

 

ESSENTIAL EXTERIOR DESIGN

“A seamless gliding first class form of transportation” says Samuel Chuffart, Global Design Director of Icona.
The mono-volume exterior is unlike any vehicle you have ever seen. The shape looks purposeful and beautiful.
The profile and surfacing look as though the vehicle was shaped to move efficiently and quietly through the
air. Being fully autonomous, there is no side glass in the traditional sense, rather semi-transparent bodycolor
panels that allow the occupants to see out from the vehicle but remain shrouded for privacy while traveling.
The upper glass from windscreen to the complete roof is asymmetrical, divided into fully transparent and semitransparent
glass, giving a distinct visual cue that this vehicle is something truly different.
The Icona Nucleus is a self-moving executive lounge: the body side is characterized by long elegant sculpting
which emphasizes the luxury nature of the vehicle. Like a protective bubble, the Nucleus protects and embraces
its passengers, at the same time offering a stunning view of the outside, thanks to an extremely wide glass
surface which constitutes the majority of the upper body.
The graphically asymmetrical body is divides by two portions marked by a diagonal line which crosses the
roof from front right to back left, dividing the transparent and partly semi-transparent glass. Just one large
entry is granted, to the right, on the safe side. It includes the main sliding door and the oyster roof opening to
accommodate the passengers in a walk-in access.
With a length of 5.25 meters and a width of 2.12 meters, the Nucleus stands at 1.75 meters high on 27 inch
wheels. Its slick aerodynamic design with full underbody diffuser and wheel arch aerodynamic blade extensions
bring the CX to just under 0.22, a very good number that definitely helps its rolling resistance and energy
consumption. Its in-wheel motor technology helps to optimize the space inside the Nucleus and its hydrogen
range extender can bring the autonomy to 1200 kilometers.

 

LUXURY LOUNGE- LIKE INTERIOR

Now that all occupants are passengers, their interaction and the individuality of their personal space become
a priority. Individual preferences can be catered for, as seating arrangements are flexible. The road is there and
can be seen, but it is no longer the focus of each and every passenger, as in a cinema. This first class traveling
lounge is not a foreign concept if we consider air travel. The flexibility of movement for each individual, along
with the Infotainment guided by the car computer, gives a sense of luxury well beyond the material and finish
that will be expected from such modern and sophisticated vehicles.
This is not too dissimilar to the iPhone, which changed what we consider a phone to be: doing a lot more with
what seems in appearance to be less.
The Nucleus can easily accommodate six people. Seats can be adjusted to different use, rotating to face the
desk or the rear passengers in the front, strongly reclining to the rear and even transforming into a couch on
center. The large seats in the front and in the back make it as comfortable and cozy as a luxury living room. If
you are heading to a five-star hotel, sitting in the Nucleus will make it seem as if you are already in your room. A
small table and all necessary spaces and connections for a laptop are available, as well as a wet bar so that even
the shortest trip can be effectively used for business or leisure.
Being a large luxury car, the inspiration of Nucleus has come as much from the Concorde airplane as from a
yacht. A gliding speed form that travels elegantly through the landscapes of cities and countryside. A flair
which may after all take us back to the true romance of the image of travelling in the 1930’s; a time when there
was no aggressive design to illustrate people’s driving ambition. In spite of actual dynamic capabilities that
would naturally be well beyond what was possible for a driven car of that size, Nucleus shows a more mature
and peaceful world waiting for us.

Vulcano Titanium

ITALIAN PRIDE: VULCANO TITANIUM SHOWED AT PARCO VALENTINO

Cecomp shows Vulcano Titanium for the first time in Italy

Turin, Italy – 1 June 2016.  From 8 to 12 of June, the supercar designed by Icona (among the five most desired thing, in the Playboy list) will be showed in the core of Turin during the 2016 edition of Parco Valentino – Salone & Gran Premio.

The Vulcano Titanium is a one-off creation from Italian Design House ICONA is a world first with its unique titanium and carbon fiber body.

“Inspiration for the Vulcano came from the world’s fastest plane, the Blackbird SR-71, whose sharp and dramatic silhouette complimenting its sensual surface transitions was key to the styling of the Vulcano” –Samuel Chuffart, Icona design director.

The naked titanium body is a sculpture, revealing its 10,000 hours of hand-crafted work in the most pure form. The Vulcano’s strongly sculpted body side and voluptuous shapes evacuate the hot air from the engine and reduce air turbulence generated by the wheels.

The Vulcano Titanium was built by CECOMP, an Italian coachbuilder with a long and glorious history in the Racing Field (eg: complete body development and production of Lancia Delta S4, Lancia Delta Integrale, Alfa Romeo 155 DTM). The powertrain is the work of Mr. Claudio Lombardi, ex-Scuderia Ferrari director and mastermind of numerous world champion cars, and Mr. Mario Cavagnero the man behind the Lancia Racing Team and father of the engine of many championship-winning cars (the famous Lancia Delta Integrale and 037, as well as the complete winning series Peugeot 205 T16 and 405 t16 series)

The Vulcano (volcano in Italian) has a mid-front engine calibrated for homologated road and race use with an optimum balance of usability and efficiency. Capable to be tuned to well near 1.000 horsepower should the owner demand it, the optimized 670 horsepower and 840 N/m of its supercharged 6.2L V8 is coupled with a paddle-shift close ratio gearbox from Automac Modena, allowing 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and 0 to 200 km/h in 8.8 seconds.

VULCANO CONCEPT

Inspired by advanced architecture such as works by Zaha Hadid and Asymtote, the formal language draws also from advanced design airplanes, very suited to the hypercar ergonomics.

The Vulcano uses a consistent theme of dynamic triangles set in horizontal symmetry, reminiscent of the ICONA logo, which balance the dynamism of the volume. To connect the features and divide each part, tight lines complement the voluptuous shape, enhancing the car’s sensual power.

MODEL

The right balance between aggressive power and harmonious beauty was truly resolved in the clay model process. After many weeks of ¼ scale clay model development, the model was further refined in 3D with the inclusion of prefeasibility checks, including ergonomics, crash tests and aerodynamics.

INTERIOR Concept

Made principally from carbon fiber and black Alcantara and with fully adjustable leather bucket seats, the high tech interior has a race inspired feel. The interior design is driver-oriented, with functions such as GPS, radio and car diagnostics combined in a single large touchscreen, while all elements in the overall design have been integrated in a sophisticated and refined way.

NEO

Following the ICONA lineage, the new NEO concept sets out to explore the inspirations and daily challenges of life in a busy metropolis such as Shanghai. Like its sister Fuselage, NEO is a 4-seater vehicle whose design is adapted to the reality of an electrically-powered package, allowing design creativity to expand away from the classical thermic engine layout. However, the aim of NEO is not just to provide the balance of style and maximum practicality expected from a modern city car. NEO’s bold styling and asymmetric design theme combine clear lines with sensual dynamic automotive sculpting.

The inspiration for NEO is derived from the latest architectural trends which have reshaped the landscape of Shanghai, the place where the car was designed. Its sharp and contrasted lines combine simple geometry and sensual surface transitions. Its main theme consists of “anti-wedge” design construction, meant to balance the general lean-forward attitude of the car, resulting in a low front nose very close to the road and leaving more space for a generous panoramic windshield. As a contrast, the back end features more body trim with a very high beltline, conveying a high sense of safety and cozy personal space.
Unconventional, the car interior has evolved with a passenger-orientated layout: instead of solely focusing on the road straight ahead, rear passengers can enjoy a wrap-around ottoman-style rear couch, taking advantage of the absence of a rear left door and offering a large glass area focused on the pedestrian side of the road, allowing passengers to enjoy the city skyline.
Shanghai taxis commonly only allow passenger doors to open on the right hand side, leaving a single access on the left hand side for the driver and considerably increasing passenger safety. In NEO, passenger access can be safely and practically made from the right side, thanks to a large two-door opening and the absence of a B post. The interior’s asymmetry continues with two floating elements emerging from the sides and creating the dashboard, rationally optimizing the feeling of space and adapting their shape for their respective usage. The empty space left in-between has enabled the central screen display to be placed as far forward as possible, for greater visual and physical comfort.

The technology of this electric concept is a motor-in-wheel application with a total of 21 kw. Thanks to the optimized lightweight body (720kg including the electric pack of 130kg from which 90kg are batteries), NEO was conceived to reach a top speed of 120 km/hour and has a city driving range of 150km. It was developed by Icona’s technical partners, ACTUA and Italtecnica, based in Italy. Within its very compact dimensions (2.2m wheel base on a total length of 3.4m), Neo can seat four adults. Conceived for city usage, the lightweight body has a comfortable height of 1.5m which is well balanced over its stable width of 1.63m. The car is aimed at the younger generation of buyers who aspire to own a responsible car that represents their values. Their values are based on freedom: the freedom to breathe in a healthy environment; the freedom to express their individuality; the freedom to move comfortably in their own individual space; the freedom to share time with friends, connected both to the real world and the virtual world; the freedom to not actively be driving. The world is changing and so are our automobiles. Sustainability drives the reconsideration of all aspects of lifestyle and “green cars” are now marvels of technology. Mass production technology is shaping personal transportation into a design which is forever more approachable – yet potentially less memorable.
“Passion and aerodynamics” drove the development of the ICONA Fuselage.
Taking to heart the need to create a sustainable car, ICONA has combined the efficiency of a reduced aerodynamic drag through its slick shape with controlled air flow and a reduced frontal area. Yet, the Fuselage is a roomy 4-seater electric vehicle with a sensuous and exciting design, bringing to tomorrow’s sedan the emotion of a true GT. Fuselage proves how a 4-seater sedan can evolve into an elegant and sporty profile, evoking at first sight the speed and swish of the wind blowing over an airplane’s fuselage.
The attention to aerodynamics is eye-catching: the low profile, the reduced front section and several specific devices allow an optimized efficiency, with a Cd of 0.26 as measured during its digital development in CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and later in the wind tunnel.
A single large gull-wing door and the absence of a B pillar ensure convenient passenger access and offer a partial clearance of the roof. At a height of 1307 mm, the Fuselage could hardly be called a compromised sports car; instead it is a rational balance between optimized ergonomics and a reduction in the overall profile to maximize efficiency.
With a wheelbase of 2870 cm, the Fuselage’s four passengers enjoy generous leg room. Horizontal space gain does not affect the vehicle’s drag efficiency, and the car’s slightly stretched profile is reminiscent of a plane fuselage.
The inspiration derived from airplanes does not end there. In the interior, the floating dashboard and center console are inspired by fighter jets’ slick yet sophisticated design. In the lower part, the long horizontal stretch of white contains corrugated strokes reminiscent of Feng shui gardens. The upper part – in a contrasting dark brown espresso color – moves into more aeronautical language, enhancing the sophistication of functional shapes while keeping their simplicity. The design of the seats and door panels express the same balance as the exterior design, mixing stretched flowing shapes with dramatic dynamic graphics. The driver display provides driving direction in the center with other driving information (concerning mainly speed and autonomy) on either side. Guidance, radio, air control, and vehicle status check are all accessible from the touch screen on the center console which also contains a finger print recognition start button, avoiding the need to use keys. Rear view cameras combined with the radio and GPS antennas on each side of the car provide an image which is displayed in the center of the dashboard. This enables complete rear vision image without dead spots, while the drag created stays minimal.

THE TECHNOLOGY

Offering a ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicle) full electric concept, Fuselage is powered by four sub-axle motors. An AKU (Actuation Traction unit) executes both motors driving and intelligent high voltage battery management. The energy supply of the motors, the high performance gearboxes, and all electronic systems are electronically controlled.
In full electric mode, with a total output of 100 kW, Fuselage can reach a speed of 200 Km/h, from 0 to 100 Km/h in 4.5 seconds and has a range of 220 Km with a fully charged battery. The 360 Kg battery pack provides 15 kW/h and has a 380 V nominal voltage. Located in the central tunnel under the front seats, the pack contains 105 cells and can be charged by a SAE J1772 connector, in addition to the regenerating brake power recuperation and two solar panels which provide enough energy for interior electric components. The EMU (Energy Management Unit) regulates and dispatches the appropriate amount of energy at the right place according to the different needs of the vehicle.
A serial hybrid powertrain is available as an option, as enough space has been kept aside to integrate a range extender. With the additional volume of a fuel tank and a small displacement engine running at stable low speed to charge batteries, this option provides an efficient way to extend the autonomy of the vehicle.
